Kite Flying in Toledo AreaThe local Black Swamp Air Force members try to meet in force the first Saturday and third Sunday each month at Maumee Bay State Park. The main group meets around 1:00pm but the buggy group gets there early while the lots are open. During winter months attendance is lower but during summer months it's not unusual for twenty or more kiters to show up. The Toledo area is blessed by a great metro park system. In addition there are numerous soccer fields and ball diamonds. In otherwards there are plenty of spots to fly kites. Favorite SitesMaumee Bay State ParkLocate just a few miles east of Toledo on the shore of Lake Erie this state park opened in 1992. There is a six acre sized mowed grass area next to a large parking area and restrooms where most of the flying takes place. In addition there is a large beach area 3/4 mile long and hundred yards across. However during the season kites should not be flown on the beach area as it is well utilized by the public. There are only a few small trees around the site , that means not much shade is available but it makes it an excellent site for kite flying. Buggy pilots can use the parking lots and walks but only when visitor actvitiy is low. Normally in the mornings before 10:30am and in inclement weather the middle parking lot is unused. Starting in late Fall through early Spring visitor activity is very low so buggying can be done about anytime and anywhere including on the main and inland lake area beaches. Cass Road socker fields, MaumeeA local favorite spot about anytime it's not being used by the soccer players. Being in town it's gusty wind but the grass fields have great drainage and are well maintained. We used to buggy there, unforntunatley the crazy local officials decided to build a new city pool there and install dividers in the parking lot. There is still room to fly kites on soccer fields. Nova France Recreation Area, WhitehouseA huge grass area just south of downtown Whitehouse which has several soccer fields on the northern side of it. At the southern end of the site there is a large grass area not used much that is mowed making it a great flying site any time. A nice peaceful country atmosphere. Just park along the road or better is a stone lot on the far sourth east side. |
