Outside Fixing
We did a little roof caulking in November 2006 just after we got it as a few warm days hit over Thanksgiving weekend. I used some caulk I found at the Andersons in Maumee. It's says for RV use on it. It is very sticky stuff to work with and takes several days to set up. Cooler weather came so we'll have to finish the new caulking come Spring 2007.
In a bunch of outside spots the previous owner used plain old drywall screws. Those will of course rust over time and their holding power isn't so great either. I replaced a bunch of screws around the outside to tighten her up a bit. Pictured above I used ceramic coated screws with a hex head I bought at Andersons.. They come with a small rubber washer covered with a coated metal washer. I'm not going for looks here just something that hopefully is gona last. I probably should have used a marine grade stainless screw from boltdept.com but these are inexpensive and with little rubber washers I can use them to seal up old screw holes. .
My first big project was to transform a 25 x 16 tarp into a winter hat for "Lucky Dog". I also made up sides that snap on. There is also a cover for the LP tanks and a second cover that goes over the front hitch and LP tanks I made from scrap.
The awning I cut down from 10 foot to 6 foot 8 inches. It looks to be in decent shape. I'll need to pick up some new poles as they had a mix of some old junker poles they were using that didn't look very strong. From the old manual copy I bought on EBAY it looks like it was standard to use a 10 foot awning. The front valance pole I cut down to 7 foot so it fits in the pipe bumper.
The rims were very rusty and I got them cleaned up very quickly with the help of this round sanding thingy. I first used that brown Rust-oleum primer then Rust-oleum gloss black on top of it. Don't use the spray cans, the oil based stuff in the cans is thick and covers in one coat. This paint gives off a lot of fumes so it's a must do outside or an open garage door type of job.
New feet for Lucky Dog! The Anthony Wayne Tire shop is almost next door to me so I got new 6 ply trailer tires. Here I'm trying to get the paint to dry a little faster with the portable heater.
I got some new tail lights from http://www.racersrvstuff.com/ which has a lot RV parts and supplies. They are of a smaller size and off course now I have old screw holes to patch up. I did straighten the bumper out enough to put the awning valance poles in.
From Vintage Trailer supply I got new marker lights. I don't know why but several of the old lenses had the same crack straight down the middle. Actually I only needed one complete light and then like four or five lenses which I seen someone was selling the Arrow lenses only on Ebay like a day after I got several complete lights. Anyway all the lights are working now and we should be good to go there.
From Vintage Trailer supply http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/ I got some window gasket stock for the bottom and top of the windows. It's very time consuming to get the old gaskets out. I found a razor knife is the best tool to use for cutting the old one out along with a bunch of patience. I did the bottom side of all the windows in a few hours. The top side requires taking off the little shade piece on top of the window so that's another long project some weekend that I'll save for Spring as you got to recaulk some then also.
