We have a nice selection of used sails that can keep the
price of your first board package low. When you first start
windsurfing you'll be uphauling and falling quite a bit
so there is no sense in buying a new sail and then scratching
it all up. When starting out a sail in that 4.5 sq meter
to 5.5 sq meter size is all you need. If you have teens
or a wife then you might even want a sail in that 3.5 to
4.5 range.
Please note I am NO longer shipping any used sails that
are priced under $100. You must make an appointment
to come see the sail or meet up with me at MBSP.
A note about Dacron and SUN verses mylar. UV rays
destroy clear plastic monofilm. UV rays also affect Dacron
but not near as quickly. I've heard that just after 80 hours
of sun rays monofilm starts to cloud, after 300 hours it
goes brittle and basically falls apart. This is why you
still see many older Dacron sails available. They are excellent
sails for beginners and you can leave them rigged all day
in the sun if you want. Older monofilm sails, if the the
monoflim is cloudy you just don't know how much life is
left, maybe alot maybe very little.
Dacron was used from beginning up to mid-80's. In the mid
80's we had mylar backed dacron which was lighter dacron
with a 2 mil clear layer of plastic adhered to it which
eliminated stretching. Around 1993 monofilm became cheap
to produce and became the standard and dacron panel construction
disappeared. Monofilm has other advantages besides low stretch
in that it does not absorb water making it lighter when
wet with no drying time. Dacron however can be kinked sharply
without problems unlike monofilm which easily gets permanent
creases in it which become weak points. In the late 90's
X-ply monofilm which is kevlar strings sandwiched between
two thin 2mil layers of monofilm became popular. X-Ply is
stronger and sometimes tinting is used between the layers
to make it more UV resistant.
A note about board sanding. The deck of windsurfing
board often has a non-slip surface of grit that acts like
rough sandpaper on skin and sails. You should knock down
any high points of grit with light sandpaper before sailing
a new board. The grit on the front several inches of the
board nose and likewise a few inches from the tail and any
on the sides of the board should be sanded near smooth.
That will help save you from costly sail repairs. Never
drag your sail over the board surface when uphauling as
that grinds the sail threads down!

- $35 - 5'-4" boom, 430 mast, adustable top,
5 battens with 1 cam - dacron mlyar backed panels, the
sail unfortunately was shipped flat leaving creases and
delams in the panels. Still it will make a great first

the 5.3 above

USED - Windwing 4.6 - $69, single
cam, 430 mast or 460 using adjustable top, about 60"
on boom. Great solid made in the USA construction and
in nice shape. About a 1992 model.

USED - Gaastra 6.5 - $35 , RAF with
3 mini battens, with original sail bag, 15' 9" luff
and 7' 8" boom, so a 460 mast with long extension
and 8 foot boom needed for this old guy. Mylar backed
dacron, one spot by lower batten the mylar was pulled
away, which I've repaired with a patch over it. If you
need a old bigger sail to match that reto board this one
will do the job. Sail is stained a bit from laying around
many years out of the bag. Comes with original sail bag.

Like new - Mistral IMCO - $45, around
a 5.0 in size , RAF, 2 mini battens, all dacron, 14' 4"
luff and 8' 4" boom, fixed top cap, orange sleeve,
white with colorfull graphics. I believe this was the
first official One Design sail for the first Mistral Superlight
One Design of the early 80's. It looks like it was used
very little, the numbers I was able to pull off the sail.

Used - Mistral Biradial 6.0 - $40,
RAF mast 15' 5" and 8' 3" boom, fixed top cap,
1 full and 2 mini battens, dacron panels, pink sleeve,
red purple color. Comes with original sail bag. A favorite
sail used on Superlights.

Used - Hifly 6.0 - $12 - RAF - 1
full and 2 mini battens, mast 16' 2" boom 8' 5",
mylar mesh panels, mold stains, small holes in sleeve,
one 6" split by a seam, one split by batten. Really
an old sail. With original sail bag. Sail is lightweight
and might make a dandy .. ice boat sail.

Used Gaastra 7.0 EuroFoil - $40 -RAF
, 4 batten, 15' 11" mast and 7' boom , fixt top,
mylar back darcon panels, small 3" patch in lower
panel, number zero on it, purple sleeve, red blue colors

Rushwind 6.3 - USED - $50 - 6 battens - top can
adjust - 80" boom and 15' 9" luff, should work on 460

but it is in ok shape. I didn't see any patches or areas that
need repairs. There is no size label I could find on it but it
was sold as a 6.3 and it looks to me to be that size.
