Windsurfing Used Sails

We have a nice selection of used sails that will lower the price of that first new board package by a couple hundred dollars. When you first start windsurfing you'll be uphauling and falling quite a bit so there is no sense in buying a new sail and then scratching it all up. When starting out a sail in that 4.5 sq meter to 5.5 sq meter size is all you need. If you have teens or a wife then you might also want a sail in that 3.5 to 4.5 range.

To get an accurate quote for shipping a sail to you, please include city, state and zip code and whether a residence or business address when emailing us. Note smaller sized sails under 5.0 can often be sent USPS for under $20. Larger sails use UPS estimating at www.ups.com, sail boxes usually 6 inch sides or 7 inch sides if larger than 7.0, box length around one foot for every square meter. UPS reduced shipping prices for long narrow boxes in early 2007 so shipping larger sails is much less than it was in 2006.

A note about Dacron and SUN verses mylar. UV rays destroy clear plastic monofilm. UV rays also affect Dacron but not near as quickly. I've heard that just after 80 hours of sun rays monofilm starts to cloud, after 300 hours it goes brittle and basically falls apart. This is why you still see many older Dacron sails available. Around 1993 monofilm became cheap to produce and became the standard and dacron panels were out. Monofilm has other advantages besides low stretch in that it does not absorb water making it lighter when wet with no drying time. Dacron however can be kinked sharply without problems unlike monofilm which easily gets permanent creases in it which become weak points. Anyway the point of all this is that currently there still are a lot of nice old dacron sails out there. They are excellent sails for beginners and you can leave them rigged all day in the sun if you want. Older monofilm sails, if the the monoflim is cloudy you just don't know how much life is left, maybe alot maybe very little.

A note about board sanding. The deck of windsurfing board often has a non-slip surface of grit that acts like rough sandpaper on skin and sails. You should knock down any high points of grit with light sandpaper before sailing a new board. The grit on the front several inches of the board nose and likewise a few inches from the tail and any on the sides of the board should be sanded near smooth. That will help save you from costly sail repairs. Never drag your sail over the board surface when uphauling as that grinds the sail threads down!

specs, top, xply

Reserved for sale with new board and rig purchase only.
NeilPryde Cam World Cup Wave 5.0 - Used - $65 - 5 batten - RAF - This is one fine beginner sail, in premo condition. Newer 1995ish year model, with kevlar type X-ply panels. Wave sails are made stronger then normal sails and thus can take more abuse. This sail looks to have had very little use.

specs, flip side, top, sleeve holes, leech hole

Reserved for sale with new board and rig purchase only.
Gastra 5.7 Cam Lite - Used - $45 - 5 battens, 2 - cams, great condition but has a couple small holes in the sleeve and one on the leech, looks like maybe a squirrel chewed on it a little. Panels are dacron on one side with mylar film on the other. Adjustable head cap. The sail looks like it was used very little. The 5.7 size makes it a nice old dacron sail to start with.

USED - 1993 Windwing Twin Cam 4.3 - $99 - boom 5'0" -6 battens with two cams - boom Can be rigged on a 460 but better rigged on a 430 mast. No repairs have been made or needed, though this is an older model year it's has not seen much sun or use as we rarely get 4.3 winds in Ohio, still has my old race numbers on it from the longboard racing days. The older Windwings like this one were American built in San Franciso and are built well!

Specs , Top

USED - 1994 Wingwing Twin Cam 4.8 - $139 - boom 5'4" - 6 battens with two cams - no repairs have been made or needed to this sail, we rarely get 4.8 winds in Ohio so the sail has not seen much sun or water time. I can't say this sail is like new but I would say it is in very nice condition. The older Windwings like this one were American built in San Franciso and are built well!

Rushwind 6.3 - USED - $50 - 6 battens - top can adjust - 80" boom and 15' 9" luff, should work on 460 mast with some extension. Surely an older sail from the late 80's but it is in ok shape. I didn't see any patches or areas that need repairs. There is no size label I could find on it but it was sold as a 6.3 and it looks to me to be that size.
